How Porcelain Veneers Can Improve Your Smile

People with healthy and beautiful smiles just can’t help but show them off. But, they’re only a minority, and for the many others blessed with not-so-perfect teeth, smiling isn’t exactly as pleasurable of an experience. One could even say that it’s somewhat painful, both emotionally and physically.

The good thing is that there are a lot of available options to fix whatever dental problems is behind your imperfect smile. One of the more popular options is porcelain dental veneers.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain made to fit over the front side of your teeth. They’re known for their durability and how easily they blend in with your natural teeth as they’re made to match both its color, as well as shape.

The process starts by preparing your teeth for the veneers. This involves removing approximately one millimeter of enamel from each of the tooth’s surface. Then, an impression is taken of the inside of your mouth, where it will be used to form a mold that is then sent over to a dental laboratory where the veneers are custom made.

Once the veneers are ready, they will be bonded to your teeth using a special cement.

Can Veneers Benefit Me?

Discolored, chipped, decayed and poorly shaped teeth can all benefit from porcelain veneers. Those with light gaps in between their teeth, as well as those with bite-related problems and minor crowding are also good candidates.

Then again, it’s still up to your dentist to determine if porcelain veneers are good for you or if you’re better off with other treatment options.

Regardless of whether you’re a good candidate for porcelain veneers or not, your dentist should be able to help you get what you want and even give you a preview of the new you.

Pros and Cons

Aside from giving you the best set of teeth you’ve ever had, the main advantage when it comes to porcelain veneers is how little to no tooth structure is lost. At the same time, the veneers provide added resistance against stains from tea, coffee and others. Bonus? You won’t need anesthesia.

As good as porcelain veneers are, they do have some drawbacks, such as the procedure being irreversible because once enamel is removed, it can no longer be put back again. Also, the color of the veneer cannot be corrected anymore once they’ve been cemented. And while veneers are very strong, they can and will be damaged if you frequently chew on hard stuff, which is bad news for those who regularly chew ice or bite their fingernails.

Proper Care and Maintenance

The best way to take care of your new porcelain veneers is to take care of them as you would as your own teeth. This includes brushing twice a day, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash. Though, you may want to make an extra effort to visit the dentist much more frequently for checkups and regular cleaning. Also, if you clench or grind your teeth, especially while you’re asleep, you may want to ask your dentist for a night-guard to help protect your veneers from accidentally breaking.
