Teeth Whitening Q&A
What happens during teeth whitening treatment?
Teeth whitening treatment is the application of a bleaching gel, usually including hydrogen peroxide, to lift stains from your teeth. Before any whitening treatment begins, you’ll have a thorough dental exam to ensure your teeth will benefit from treatment.
If you opt for in-office Zoom teeth whitening, your dentist will place a soft rubber lip guard in your mouth to bare your teeth and protect your lips and gums from the bleaching solution. Then your dentist will apply the hydrogen peroxide bleaching solution to your teeth. Once the gel is applied, a special light will be directed at your teeth to activate the gel for about 15 minutes. The in-office teeth whitening process typically takes between 60-90 minutes from start to finish.
If you choose at-home KoR teeth whitening treatment, your dentist will provide you with trays and whitening gel. You’ll put the whitening gel in the trays at home and wear the aligners for 30-60 minutes. You can use the treatment once or twice a day. Most patients will repeat the process twice a day for a week. Your dentist will give you customized instructions to get the best results.
Why are my teeth yellow?
Your teeth may be stained or yellow for a variety of reasons. For example, many of the foods we enjoy, like coffee, tea, wine, and berries will stain your teeth. Smoking and tobacco use can also stain your teeth.
Some stains are internal, like staining from certain medications or trauma. Teeth whitening treatment may not be effective on these stains. Your dentist will recommend other treatments to help you get the bright, healthy smile you desire.
What should I do to take care of my teeth after whitening treatments?
You will brush and floss your teeth twice a day as normal following teeth whitening treatments. Some patients may experience mild tooth and gum sensitivity following treatment, but this typically subsides after a day or so. You can avoid foods and activities that lead to staining to extend the effectiveness of your teeth whitening treatment.
